Getting Engaged During the Holidays: the Good, the Bad and the Beautiful

15 Oct 2020

written by: Rose Smith

It’s the holiday season— also known as “Engagement Season” in the wedding world! Yes, seriously!  Literally, the top four proposal dates of the whole year are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day, in their respective order. With around 40% of all engagements taking place between Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day, you are in good company if you’re contemplating popping the question for a holiday season engagement!

This year, even with what a wild and unpredictable year 2020 has been, we’re eager to celebrate with allll the lovebirds taking their commitment to the next level this holiday season! There are tons of things to consider about getting engaged during the most wonderful time of the year, so we’ve outlined the good, the bad and the beautiful of holiday engagements!

Pop the question this holiday season!

The Good:

The holidays can be one of the best times to pop the question. Not only is it a time of year that is festive and heartwarming for many of us, but it’s also a great time to get engaged with family and loved ones nearby to celebrate afterward! With Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years all happening within about 5 weeks, there are often several naturally occurring times that your friends and family may be planning to gather already. This is an important detail for couples who want to be able to celebrate their new engagement (and show off that sparkly engagement ring!) with their family and close friends. Of course, all of these plans must be held loosely this year, since travel and getting together in groups may not be recommended.

Some couples love taking a major holiday and turning it into their special day by adding their engagement to the mix. Getting engaged on Christmas Eve gives special meaning to all the Christmas Eves to come as they enjoy married life! Plus, with so much of society taking a collective pause during the holiday season (at least at some point!), couples may already be in “vacation mode”, making the marriage proposal something they feel like they can bask in through the holiday season.

Give your holidays a special layer of meaning by opting for a holiday engagement!

The Bad:

Despite the many reasons a holiday engagement is a great idea, there are several reasons it may not be a good fit for you and your soon-to-be fiancé. While some couples love layering their special engagement story onto an already established holiday, other couples may not want to share the date, so to speak. There is also SO much going on during the holidays, it may feel like your engagement could get lost in the shuffle. In the same vein, loved ones could already be traveling or otherwise booked, meaning any spontaneous celebrating may need to wait.

Another consideration that may indicate that a holiday engagement is not a good fit for you and your beloved is if the holidays are not a historically happy time for one or both of you. Not everyone looks forward to this time of year, for a myriad of reasons, and that is perfectly ok. All things considered, it may feel a bit forced to add an engagement to a time of year that tends to be challenging.

The holiday season offers so many beautiful settings for your holiday proposal!

The Beautiful:

With all the twinkly lights, cozy décor and the possibility of a fresh blanket of snow, there’s no doubt that the holidays may be the most beautiful time of the year to get engaged! Plus, since it’s a season that we expect to take photos, etc, it’s more likely that you’ll be looking fab in your proposal photos! It’s win/win! Pro Tip: Use one of your proposal pictures on personalized full color photo cocktail napkins at your engagement party!

Of course, there are so many idyllic settings open during the holidays, too. From pumpkin patches to apple orchards to Christmas tree farms, there is no shortage of outdoor settings that bring the beauty in a big way. Small towns and big cities alike offer special holiday-themed atmospheres, too! There’s a reason there are SO many proposals that happen at the Rockafeller Center in NYC every holiday season— the ice skating and the epic Christmas tree make for a fantastic backdrop for your special moment.
